Advance notification of performances

Subject: Advance notification of performances
Hi, I have read many email announcements from fellow SCI members about upcoming concerts. Most of them begin with something like "If you happen to be in (name of town)". I would love to have attended some of these concerts, and because I have flexibility for scheduling and travel, I actually could have attended many. Unfortunately, it seems that about 90% or more of such announcements only reach the membership a few days (or less) before the concert. Some of them have even been received as late as 30 minutes before the concert!!
I have been reminded that such notices serve the worthy purpose of documentation and notification of what we are up to with our music. But I think all of us who are composers should be reaching out to more people, inviting them to actually come and hear the music. We need to understand that no one can be expected to attend a concert if they only get a few hours notice, and for those willing to travel to another town, less than a few days' notice is simply not going to work in most cases. Surely most or all of these events are planned and announced well in advance! Can we all please make sure the announcement reaches the SCI membership as soon as the details are confirmed, and not at the very last minute? Having booked thousands of concerts in my career, I can assure you that attempts to notify potential audience members at the last minute rarely produce any bodies at the door.
Thanks, James Gibson, D.M.A. SCI composer member
