2015 IU South Bend Ensemble CONCEPT/21 Call for Scores
The Music Department at IU South Bend is pleased to invite applications for the IU South Bend Ensemble CONCEPT/21 Call for Scores featuring new music ensemble EC/21, at the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts. This competition will take place during the 2014-2015 academic year. Submissions must be received by December 15, 2014.
Eligibility
• Applicants must be students enrolled in either senior High Schools or colleges in the Michiana Area (St. Joseph, Elkhart, La Porte, Marshall, and Starke Counties in Indiana and Berrien and Cass Counties in Michigan). • Works should have never been publicly performed before and never published or awarded a prize in a competition. • Compositions should be no more than 10 minutes in length for the maximum instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello, piano, and one percussionist. A minimum of three instruments must be chosen from this instrumentation. • Incomplete, illegible, or late applications will not be considered. Composers must provide professional, legible parts. • If selected, composers must attend rehearsals and premiere of the work in the last concert to the season, on April 17, 2015. • The top two selected composers may be offered a scholarship for up to 30 credits a year of undergraduate study at IU South Bend or 18 credits of graduate study (subject to verification of minimum scholarship requirements in GPA/SAT and acceptance to the music composition program).
Application Process
• Composers should submit two hard copies of the score and a set of parts in a manila envelope with their name, title of the work, and the reference “Application to the 2015 IU South Bend String Quartet Composition Competition.” With the copies of the score and parts, a short biography should be included. • The scores and parts must be anonymous; they should bear no name or any reference that could be traced to the name of the composer. Non-anonymous entries will be disqualified. • In addition to the hard copy submissions, a PDF file including the score and parts must be emailed to jormuniz at iusb.edu • Scores need to be presented in the following format: • Letter-size paper with a weight of at least 28 lb. • Double-sided printed with a card-stock cover sheet indicating the title only. • In another sheet, before the first page of music, title, duration, instrumentation, and program notes should be included. • Staff size shall be no less than 6 mm. and no more than 7 mm. for the score and 7 mm. for all parts. • All copies of the score and parts shall be presented with wire, plastic comb, or saddle-stitch binding.
Selection Process
• The quality and idiomatic instrumental writing of the score submitted are the primary evaluation criteria. It is in the applicant's best interest that the score be clear, accurate, and the best representation of the composer's work. • The music director of Ensemble CONCEPT/21 will evaluate the scores first and make the selection of finalists. • An outside juror will make the final winning selection(s) out of the finalist works. • The winner(s) will be announced no later than January 15, 2015. • The premiere of selected works will take place on the last concert of the season, on April 17, 2015.
