Subject: Call for new works of Music-Theatre
Dear Colleages,
Please see the exciting new opportunity below!
Call for new works of Music-Theatre The Truman State University Departments of Music and Theater invite composers and writers to submit works for a concert of readings from new musicals, operas, and experimental works. Part of the New Horizons Music Festival, the concert will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2014 on the Truman campus in Kirksville, Missouri.
We are specifically interested in evening-length works that could benefit from this type of development.
There is no entrance fee associated with this call and there will not be remuneration of any sort (including travel expenses). Authors of the selected works are welcome to attend, but it is not a requirement.
Parameters
We will be giving fully rehearsed concert readings of excerpts from completed musicals, operas, or similar works.
Submitted works should not yet have been given a full production. Works that have been work-shopped or have had readings in the past are accepted. We also have the resources to give performances of works that are orchestrated for small-medium instrumental ensembles and chorus. Truman doesn’t have a dance program–we are not interested in works primarily for dancers, and will not be realizing choreography. During this concert reading performers will be using music stands; staging and lighting will be limited. Recording
We will produce audio and video recordings and photographs of the concert. These will be made available to the authors for their own use. These same materials will be archived by the University Library and excerpts may be used by the University for promotional purposes. Authors will receive the media material plus printed programs.
Submitting
Works submitted should have a full script and piano/vocal score (plus a full instrumental score if the work is orchestrated). For the first submission round we are asking for a one-page synopsis and demo recordings of 3 musical excerpts.
The deadline to submit is July 21, 2014. Authors will be notified by August 1st if we need to see the complete script and score. The final decision will be made by September 9.

The New Horizons Music Festival is a day of contemporary music featuring performers from the university and the surrounding region. The Festival includes performances of most of the major genres in modern performance: chamber groups, multimedia, solo performers, large ensembles, and theatrical performance. The concerts and ongoing curated music exhibition provide a substantive slice of contemporary music focusing on forward-looking music.
The sixteenth edition of Truman’s festival of contemporary and experimental music, this year’s Festival features 6 concerts on the beautiful Truman State University campus in Kirksville, Missouri.
We are pleased to announce that our guest composer for this year’s festival is Amy X Neuburg, an renowned composer and performer of electric and eclectic cabaret music accompanied using her own unique blend of technologies that involve electronic percussion and live-looping. At the close of the festival, the Truman Percussion will perform a newly commissioned work by Ms. Neuburg for percussion ensemble and soprano.
The New Horizons Music Festival will be held on the Truman campus on Saturday, October 25th.
You view the web material from last year’s concerts and read the program booklet to get a sense of the Festival.
