Hello SCI members!
After much ado, the students of the SCI University of Iowa Chapter have made our final decisions on the pieces to be performed at this year's New Music Symposium:
Never the Same River, for Bassoon, 2 Violins, Cello and Piano - Harry Stafylakis (CUNY)
Ocotillo, for multi-percussion, seasonally variable electronics, and video - Thomas Beverly (BGSU)
For the first time this year, we will also have a paper session, featuring presentations by Ines Thibault (CUNY), who will present her paper “Compositional Spaces of Mario Davidovksy’s Quaretto, (1987),” and Kenn McSperrit (University of Oklahoma), who will present his paper, “Phonetic Composition.” The paper session will also include presentations by University of Iowa students Lori Palamara, Andy Thierauf, Sean Laughead, and Solomon Fenton-Miller.
92 compositions and 5 papers proposals were submitted this year and most were very high in quality. Thank you to all who submitted - please consider submitting again next year.
The concert will be held on April 6 at 7:30 in the Riverside Recital Hall and will feature these pieces, along with recent works by current University of Iowa composition students. The paper session will be held on April 6 at 12-3pm, at the UCC Recital Hall.
Please join us if you are in the Iowa City area! Jason Palamara Vice President, SCI University of Iowa Chapter
