Dear All,
While I was a female composition major at Oberlin college, a number of my female colleagues and I approached the dean about a hostile environment we experienced in required classes with a particular composition faculty member. The women composers were discouraged from pursuing sexual harassment proceeds, and the faculty member was "encouraged" to resign. The result was a great deal of public slander on the part of these female students.
Nancy's commentary on the state of affairs did not surprise me, but it did make me wonder about my own path since then away from composition, into a career that balances composition with scholarship in music theory and musicology. If my experience had been different, might I be included in such a program? And would I be listed in the announcement?
