Subject: Kenneth Benoit has died
I am very sad to learn of Kenneth’s passing. I knew that he had recently received a very devastating prognosis. A few years my senior, he grew up less than five miles from me, although I did not meet him until our graduate school years. We followed similar academic paths, both having received degrees from the University of Miami and LSU, and both having taught at south Florida community colleges. I also find it interesting that we both wrote high school alma maters (text only in my case). No stranger to cancer myself, we sometimes compared notes about our experiences when we would chat at conferences in many parts of the US. I remember the two south Florida boys shivering in the cold winds of Fargo, North Dakota at a CMS Great Lakes Regional Conference a few years ago! However, what I will remember most about Ken is that, like me, he had a wonderful and supportive spouse who would travel to conferences with him. Olga got to know Barbara from some of the SCI and CMS concerts at which we presented works. The thing that I will always admire most about Ken is that he and Barbara would attend every concert presented at a conference because for him, to do otherwise would slight his colleagues. We have lost a fine colleague. I am in tears as I write this.
