Subject: the question of a request for an Autographed Photo or CD Cover
Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to the question! It was really great to receive so much good input weighing in on this query.
The responses were almost equally divided between “go ahead” and “don’t trust it.” But with that said, no one seemed to present a strong scenario of how this could actually be a harmful scam. And many thought that it seems like something that music enthusiast collectors might legitimately do.
So, since Alex Shapiro usually has a good finger on the pulse of the contemporary music scene and has been way involved on many different levels, I enjoyed her more light-hearted take on it, and appreciated her follow through research. So, I think I will go with her instincts on this. (see below)
And, I also really appreciated hearing Rebecca Oswald’s inventive solution for handling future requests. (see below)
Along with the good advice to autograph either just with a first name (thanks, Rebecca) or with a "stage" signature that wouldn't be confused with your "banking” signature (thanks, Michael Scott-Nelson).
Seems like a great many of us have received similar requests, guess there might be a surprising interest happening in terms of collections of contemporary composers autograph. (Who knew?!) I’m very glad to be enlightened by the shared responses. Thanks again. Rain
