Sheli,
Thanks for your post regarding the CD series. As you probably know, SCI has been proactive in making real progress on issues of inclusivity over the past few years. The Executive Committee is more diverse than it has ever been, and at the last SCI National Conference, we converted an ex-officio position to a voting position: Coordinator of Statistics and Diversity.
Under Jessica Rudman’s leadership in this role, we have been gathering demographic information and making plans for continuing data collection in the future. A criticism that SCI is behind on this area is certainly a fair one, but it’s important to note that after 30+ years of “discussing” diversity issues, action is really taking place now.
Regarding the CD series we received 39 submissions, which is pretty common for this type of call. We do not collect demographic data from those submitting; however just by reviewing names that I know, approximately only 15% of those that submitted likely identify as female. 40% of our adjudicators were female. It’s also worth noting that this competition is blind. All submissions are anonymous, and adjudicators do not have any way to access the personal information of a submission.
Again, thanks for your inquiry about this opportunity for SCI members. I hope I’ve answered all of your questions, but if not I hope you (or any SCI member) contacts me directly. For more information about our initiatives related to statistics and diversity, please contact Jessica Rudman directly by sending an email to scidemographics at societyofcomposers.org <mailto:scidemographics at societyofcomposers.org>.
