While I don't have a definitive position on this (I'm still struggling with it myself), I feel obligated to point out that your argument only works within a framework where universities are thought of as trade schools. That may be a valid way of looking at things. Alternatively, if a university is, instead, a place where one goes to become highly educated in the discipline of your choice, then that puts a different spin on things...
