Hello!
Thank you to everyone who has forwarded our call and told your students about the festival. Much appreciated! I’ve enjoyed speaking with so many young composers!
This is just a quick last-minute reminder that the deadline is approaching on the 3rd. If you know anyone who might be interested in participating, please, encourage them to submit!
CALL FOR ORCHESTRAL SCORES DEADLINE: April 3, 2017
Huntsville Youth Orchestra's Annual Young Composers' Forum at the Tennessee Valley Music Festival June 4-11, 2017 Huntsville, Alabama
The Huntsville Youth Orchestra announces the Seventh Annual Young Composers Forum. Composers, aged 16-22, are invited to submit orchestral works to be considered for the Forum. Up to four (4) winners will be selected for participation in the Forum and have their works performed by the Festival Orchestra (comprised of TVMF Faculty and advanced students).
Winning submissions will be rehearsed each day and performed by the TVMF Festival Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Joseph Lee and guest conductor (TBA). This performance will take place on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 7:30 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville, AL. The concert will be recorded and each composer will receive a recording of their composition. Composers will also participate in a variety of sessions hosted by TVMF Resident Composer, Robert J. Bradshaw.
Winning composers will be notified via email and phone beginning Sunday, April 23, 2017 and must accept or decline their position in the Forum by 4:00PM CST (5:00PM EST), Monday, May 1, 2017. Composers must be prepared to supply a PDF of the complete full score and parts when requested, and are required to attend the 2017 Tennessee Valley Music Festival's Young Composers' Forum, June 4-11, 2017. *Winning composers are not charged any fees to participate in the Forum.
Composers are responsible for their own transportation to Huntsville, Alabama. Hotel or home-stay will be provided for composer only. Composers younger than 18 years old will receive housing with a youth orchestra family. Composers will need to bring some money for food.
COMPETITION DETAILS:
There will be many opportunities for composers to interact with each other, faculty, and students.
FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES: - Participation in daily rehearsals of composers’ compositions. - Present and discuss your music with other composers and musicians. - Attend orchestra and chamber music rehearsals and performances. - Composition and Music Industry master classes. - Open discussions on a variety of topics. - Faculty instrument demonstrations, master classes, and Q&A sessions.
COMPOSITION REQUIREMENTS: - Maximum Duration: Seven (7) minutes. - Maximum Instrumentation: 3 flutes (piccolo), 2 oboes, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, 3 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani (limit 4), 3 percussion*, harp, and strings (vl1, vl2, va, vc, cb). *Mallet percussion is limited to tubular bells (chimes), xylophone, and glockenspiel. (No concertos or electronics.) - Any combination of winds, brass and percussion will be accepted but all works must include strings.
