Subject: Recommended history and theory/musicianship texts for community college?

Thanks in advance for the help.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to which Music History text would be good for community college students? In my case, these are music majors who in general lack much exposure to Western art music (and of varying levels of academic preparedness). There is obviously a bit of a gulf between the 'university-level' history texts and the 'music appreciation-'type approaches to the content. I'm hoping to find something that fits nicely in the middle - more accessible in approach but with content matching four-year programs. [...]
