Otterbein University Department of Music to host Society of Composers, Inc. Snapshot Conference and Transient Canvas, new music duo
On Friday, November 4 – Saturday, November 5, Otterbein University Department of Music will host a Society of Composers, Inc. Snapshot Conference with artists-in-residence Transient Canvas. Participants in the conference are members of local student chapters of SCI from Otterbein, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Cedarville University, and Heidelberg University. The purpose of the conference is to engage the community in recently composed contemporary music from the Central Ohio area and beyond. Events include presentations, masterclasses, a composer reading session, and three recitals, which are free and open to the public. All recitals will take place in Riley Auditorium in the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W Park Street in Westerville, OH.
Praised by the Boston Globe as "superb," Transient Canvas (Amy Advocat, bass clarinet & Matt Sharrock, marimba) has been blazing its own trail in the world of contemporary music since 2011. In under five years, they have premiered over 60 new works, essentially creating an entirely new repertoire for their unique instrumentation. They perform almost exclusively works written for them, and they actively seek out new composers to stretch their instrumentation to its limits. At Otterbein, they will work with Otterbein student performers, workshop pieces written by Snapshot Conference participants, and hold a public recital on Friday evening. Their residence is made possible by the generous support of the Johnstone Fund for New Music.
Below is a schedule of public events:
Friday, November 4 8:00pm Concert #1: Transient Canvas
Saturday, November 5 2:00pm Concert #2: Student Composers 8:00pm Concert #3: Red Noise (Otterbein’s New Music Ensemble) & Student Composers
