Subject: University of Florida - Graduate Studies in Music Composition
Dear Colleagues:
We would like to inform you of opportunities at the University of Florida for graduate study in music composition.
The University of Florida has an outstanding program with many wonderful opportunities to offer the motivated and talented composition student. Composition degrees are available through the Ph.D. in Music Composition with focus in acoustic and/or electroacoustic composition. Faculty composers include Dr. Paul Basler, Dr. Joseph Dangerfield, Dr. Paul Koonce, Dr. Paul Richards, and Dr. James Paul Sain.
All students admitted to the graduate program are funded with competitive stipends for teaching assistantships in the theory, composition, technology and electronic music curriculum. We will have a large number of stipends available beginning next year (2017-18).
The program includes an active and nationally recognized chapter of the Society of Composers Inc (UF-SCI) that produces several concerts of new student compositions each year, and the Sonic Computing Organization (.SCO), fostering innovative computer-music research and composition. Funding from the University of Florida student government for these organizations supports guest composer and performer residencies, graduate student professional travel, equipment and supplies, and juried art shows for the composition community.
UF hosts the Florida Contemporary Music Festival, an annual weeklong event featuring performances, lectures, and master classes involving the entire School of Music. Entering its fifth year, the spring 2017 festival will feature the Boston String Quartet, pianist Keith Kirchoff, and cellist Timothy Gill. In the fall of 2015, the Festival hosted the 50th Anniversary National Conference of The Society of Composers, Inc.
In recent years, guest composers for the festival and other events have included world-renowned artists such as Samuel Adler, Mark Applebaum, Jon Appleton, Daniel Asia, Larry Austin, Clarence Barlow, Richard Boulanger, Joel Chadabe, John Chowning, John Corigliano, Chaya Czernowin, James Dashow, Philip Glass, David Gompper, Donald Grantham, Jonty Harrison, Hubert Howe, Daniel Kellogg, Paul Lansky, Libby Larson, Lei Liang, Lowell Lieberman, Cort Lippe, James Mobberly, Gary Lee Nelson, Larry Polansky, Roger Reynolds, Katharina Rosenberger, Morton Subotnick, James Tenney, Michael Torke, Barry Truax, Dan Welcher, and Julia Wolfe.
The University of Florida New Music Ensemble presents regular concerts of cutting edge works and premieres of pieces by student composers, and Nuclear Music, a student-run contemporary music ensemble, regularly presents adventurous contemporary works and premieres of music by the UF composition community. Composition students also receive readings and performances by our symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, and choir, along with regular guest performers who workshop student pieces.
The UnBalanced Connection series of experimental electroacoustic art music presents several concerts annually, with over 57 events already on the calendar. Concerts of electroacoustic music are presented on the Great And Thunderous Octophonic Resonator (GATOR). At the core of the system is our Midas Verona 48-channel mixing console. The facilities for electroacoustic music include an octophonic (8.1) studio with ProTools HD, historic analog and digital tape machines, Symbolic Sound Kyma, Lemur touch-sensitive controller, and innovative interfaces such as eMotion Technologies’ Emote (developed at UF). Starting fall of 2017 the new addition to electronic music studios will be an all Genelec large speaker array system (20.4) capable of Ambisonic, dome and wavefield, and other innovative configurations.
I thank you for your consideration. More information on our programs, and how to apply, can be found at - http://arts.ufl.edu/academics/music/programs/composition-theory-and-technology/ or by contacting me directly at - jsain at ufl.edu
