The Sound of Silent Film Festival features newly composed scores performed live to modern Silent films. Beginning in Chicago in 2005 it has since played to sold out audiences in Austin, TX and at Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan.
This year we're thrilled to bring the event to Symphony Space featuring our most popular film ever: Gaudi, a spellbinding tour through the life and works of Barcelona architect and visionary Antonio Gaudi.
Less a documentary than a visual poem, Teshigahara's Antonio Gaudí takes viewers on a tour of Gaudí's truly spectacular architecture, including his massive, still-unfinished masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona.
With camera work as bold and sensual as the curves of his subject's organic structures, Teshigahara immortalizes Gaudí on film.
"The original score by Tōru Takemitsu has never been published," says Philip Morehead, conductor for the evening and long time Head of Music Staff at Lyric Opera Chicago, so we commissioned four established composers to write a new score and we couldn't be happier with the results."
Composers Lawrence Axelrod, Ryan Ingebritsen, Patricia Morehead and L.J. White divided up the film into four sections but each composer also wrote several minutes of music for two other sections, creating seamless music that blends perfectly with the film.
The film is rarely shown on the big screen, let alone with a brand new musical score performed live.
