Arthur Gottschalk’s massive work for orchestra, choir, and soloists, Requiem: For The Living, performed by the St. Petersburg State Symphony and Choir, conducted by Vladimir Lande, and featuring soloists Alberto Mizrahi, Lauren Snouffer, Timothy Jones, Andrea Jaber, and Daniel Mutlu, is up for Grammy consideration in 3 categories:
Best Choral Performance – Gottschalk: Requiem For The Living
Best Contemporary Classical Composition – Gottschalk: Requiem For The Living
Best Engineered Album, Classical – Gottschalk: Requiem For The Living
The Global Music Awards has this to say: Unlike all other Requiems that have come before, which have been written in memory of the departed, Gottschalk has created a masterful work of art that is a blueprint for the living, here and now. This work is a musical testament that celebrates our common humanity with no distinction between the secular and the sacred as Gottschalk believes all music is sacred in profound and joyful ways. This belief enables Gottschalk to uphold the Requiem’s origins while joining traditional Latin scripture with other sacred and philosophical writings, including a Yizkor (the Jewish prayer for the dead), the prose of Duke Ellington, Muslim and Buddhist texts, as well as juxtaposition two distinctive American folk idioms, bluegrass gospel and blues spiritual. This is a priceless work of art.
