Hi David,
Not really a "joke." (or a rather unfunny one, at any rate.)
I think "free composition" does not quite mean what you suggest. (I.e., I disagree that it implies "not following a method.")
I think it represents the goal of rigorous training. After "Gradus ad Parnassum," or a strict counterpoint class; after learning Harmony in great detail; after learning to manipulate all the parameters of music from various perspectives; and having proved it through various exercises and guided composition projects; the goal of all this is so a composer can engage in "free composition.
