I have been meaning to respond to this for some time now, sorry for the delay. Are you aware of Guerilla Opera? They are the ensemble-in-residence at the Boston Conservatory: http://guerillaopera.com/#sthash.570TGuk7.dpbs They seem to be exactly what you are looking for. They premier 1-2 new operas per year, all with a cast of 4 or fewer singers and 4 or fewer instrumentalists. Anything in their repertoire would fit your description.
Including my new opera, Pedr Solis, which premiers tonight! (Friday May 15) Anyone in the Boston area, come check it out - there are 6 shows over this weekend and next: http://guerillaopera.com/season/pedrsolis/#sthash.YagzJeiy.dpbs
